Artificial intelligence is taking over the world, and it is time for us to embrace it. GPT (Generative Pre-training Transformer) is one of the most powerful tools in the AI space, with the ability to create human-like content.
If you’re someone who wants to make money online, can creating custom GPT’s help reach your financial goals?
With ChatGPT, creating your own GPT has become more accessible than ever before. Let’s dive into the steps for creating a custom GPT with ChatGPT and explore how you can implement them.
Step 1: Get a Paid Plan
To build a custom GPT using ChatGPT, you need to upgrade to either ChatGPT Plus or Enterprise. As of this writing these plans are $20, and $30/month respectively. If you choose to be billed annually you will only pay $25 on the Enterprise Plan. You have to have a paid plan to create custom GPTS.
Step 2: Start Building
Once you’ve upgraded to ChatGPT Plus or Enterprise, you can start building your custom GPT.
Start by establishing a framework for what you want it to accomplish. To do this, consider your goals and how you want your content to sound. Here are some things to consider:
What is the language and tone you would like the GPT to use?
What is the overall personality you want the GPT to have?
Who is your target audience?
By starting out with these questions, you’ll be able to form a clear idea of what you want your GPT to accomplish.
Step 3: Come up with a Niche
Choose a niche for your GPT that is trendy, and that people are interested in. It might be anything from technology to food to fashion.
Your niche should be something that you enjoy and that you want to devote your time to. By developing a niche, you can guarantee that your GPT will attract a dedicated audience.
I created my own custom GPT that helps people create trivia games for printables.
Step 4: Name your GPT
The name of your GPT is as crucial as the content it generates. The name should appeal to your target audience and convey the unique personality of your GPT. Moreover, make sure it’s a name that you like and want to work with. The name should align with your niche and the tone of your GPT.
ChatGPT will create a name for you. You can tell the bot that you want a specific name for your custom GPT.
Step 5: Add Instructions & Examples
Suppose you want your new GPT to help people create Instagram posts for spa owners.
In that case, you need to provide instructions to your users on how they can use your GPT to generate content that will help them write posts.
You can customize the GPT by giving customization instructions to your GPT builder, or configuring your GPT yourself.
In this example you could tell your GPT builder that you would like to create educational Instagram posts and captions for spa owners that help them drive more traffic to their business. The GPT builder will ask you additional questions.
It is super simple to build a custom GPT, because ChatGPT helps you build it!
Remember to save your changes. Once you create your custom GPT, you will want to allow it to be viewed publicly (or change the setting to anyone with a link to sell access to your custom GPT)
The easier you can make it for your users to use your GPT, the more they will use it and bring you revenue.
Can I make money selling custom GPTs?
As of now, OpenAI does not pay you for the use of your custom GPT. You can sell access to your GPT by creating a checkout page for people to buy access to your GPT. I use Thrivecart for my checkout system.
See an example of how I sell a digital product through Thrivecart here.
If you allow public access to your GPT you can put your website name in the title of your custom GPT – to drive traffic to your website (like I did in the example above).
People who find your custom GPT will get interested in your brand and will go to your website to learn more about you, your products, or services.
Can free users access your custom GPT? No, only paid users can access your paid GPT.
I have hopes that OpenAI will do a revenue share model like Spotify does for its artists – but nothing has been shared publicly by the company on this topic. This is what they currently have shared on their website:
“Builders can earn based on GPT usage:
In Q1 (of 2024) we will launch a GPT builder revenue program. As a first step, US builders will be paid based on user engagement with their GPTs. We’ll provide details on the criteria for payments as we get closer.”
ChatGPT does not publicly share how many paid users it has, so there is no way to know how big your potential audience is for your custom GPT.

By creating a custom GPT with ChatGPT, you can be an early entrant to the custom GPT space, which can increase your chances for monetization once OpenAI creates a revenue sharing model for people who create custom GPTs. They plan on rolling this out in Q1 of 2024.
You can also sell access to your custom GPT through a checkout system such as Thrivecart, or on an e-commerce platform like Etsy.
Building a custom GPT is now easier than ever, and the steps outlined above will help you create a GPT that will help you make money.
So go ahead, come up with a unique personality, choose a niche, and make a name for yourself by creating your GPT!
